Rockefeller University provides a variety of housing accommodations in support of the scientific needs of the University. Apartments and dormitories are available to full-time faculty and students, and hotel accommodations are available for faculty and guests of the Rockefeller community. The Housing Department provides a safe, secure, affordable residence that is conveniently located near the campus. Most of the University's apartments are located in full-service apartment buildings, with door staff and a variety of amenities. A few smaller apartment buildings are located within a short walking distance from campus. Dormitories and guest accommodations are located on the main campus. The Rockefeller campus is located on the Upper East Side, one of New York's most desirable residential neighborhoods. The 45-person housing staff consists of a group of mechanics, porters, housekeepers, and doorpersons, a superintendent for each building, and an office staff to address administrative needs.
The Porter will be responsible for cleaning public and semi-public areas of the building, cleaning vacant apartments, moving furniture and appliances, removing garbage, and shoveling and removing snow. Will be responsible for operating compactors, stripping and buffing floors using heavy duty equipment and carpet extractors. Will assist the Lead Porter and the Superintendent as needed.
High School diploma or equivalent required. Must be courteous and have good communication skills including the ability to speak, read, and write in English. Must be able to operate a compactor and strip, wax, and buff vinyl composition tile (VCT) flooring. Must be willing to work outdoors for extended periods in variable weather conditions and walk long distances. Must be able to read and follow manufacturers' instructions and MSDS sheets regarding cleaning products. Must be able to work overtime on occasion and report to the facility for snow removal or emergency situations.
Must be able to engage in a full range of motion, stand for extended periods, bend, push, pull, and reach above the shoulders. Must be able to lift, hold, or carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
