Job Information
Rockefeller University Research Assistant | Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics in New York, New York
Organization Overview
All cells make RNA with a complex molecular machine, the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. The Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics, led by Dr. Seth A. Darst and Dr. Elizabeth A. Campbell, determines three-dimensional structures of RNA polymerase and associated proteins as it progresses through the transcription cycle. We study the model system Escherichia coli to understand fundamental mechanisms and regulation of the transcription cycle, and we study bacterial pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis to diversify our understanding and to provide a basis for therapeutic development. The structure and function of the SARS-CoV-2 RNA synthesis machinery is also under study.
Overview
The Research Assistant will execute scientific experiments under the guidance of senior scientists as well as help maintain laboratory functions such as making general solutions or calibrating equipment.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include:
Conducting experiments that involve cloning, expressing and purifying proteins
Purifying RNA/DNA
Running radioactive based transcription assays
Pickup packages/minor lab maintenance
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required, with a 2-year commitment. Basic chemistry, microbiology lab techniques and experience in cloning is a plus. Must be adept at using general lab equipment such as centrifuges, pH meters, pipettes, gel electrophoresis. Preferred but not required: experience in over expressing and purifying proteins.
