Rockefeller University Research Assistant, Neurophysiology and Behavior in New York, New York
Job Title Research Assistant, Neurophysiology and Behavior
Laboratory / Department Laboratory of Neurophysiology and Behavior
The Laboratory of Neurophysiology and Behavior takes advantage of the relatively simple nervous system of the fruit fly Drosophila to examine how flexibility is engineered into the nervous system to give rise to adaptive behaviors, at the level of both individuals and species. We examine how learning rapidly shapes neural pathways to allow each member of a species to respond appropriately to their unique experience of the world. We also consider how neural circuits are adapted over longer evolutionary time scales to give rise to species-specific behaviors. Our lab employs a multidisciplinary approach, from biochemistry to behavior, with the goal of revealing the neural basis for flexible behavior at high resolution.
The Research Assistant will be responsible for designing and developing genetic reagents in non-model Drosophila species via PiggyBac transposase, PhiC31 integrase and CRISPR-Cas9 genome engineering. Will work as part of a dynamic team studying neural circuits that generate innate and learned behaviors. Responsibilities will include designing and constructing targeting vectors, screening transformants by fluorescent markers, genotyping, and basic drosophila husbandry. Additional responsibilities may include immunohistochemistry and characterization of generated lines in behavioral assays.
Bachelor' degree in molecular biology, genetics or closely related discipline required. Extensive experience in molecular biology including DNA extraction, PCR, cloning (restriction enzyme, Gibson assembly, Gateway), and in vitro RNA transcription highly preferred. Working knowledge and experience with CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing preferred. Previous experience in drosophila genetics, genetic transformation and husbandry a plus. Must be detail-oriented and possess the technical ability to troubleshoot experiments.
